Why do we hold a 5K event?
We are proud to have an impact on children and families through life-changing services, and this is an opportunity to share about our mission and work with new people. We’ve seen families move from homelessness to stability, youth continue their education and start successful careers, and communities surround families with strong networks of support. It’s an honor to be part of their stories, and we want to extend our reach so we can serve more people. The 5K is one of the ways we raise the awareness and funds we need to do that! It’s also just a lot of fun! We love bringing people in the community together. There will be delicious food, fun activities for the kids, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.
What is Agape?
First things first: how do you say it?! Agape is pronounced uh-GAH-pay. So, what does agape mean? We all know that there are different “types” of love. The way we love the color blue, our grandma, and our spouse or significant other are all very different. In the Greek language, there are different words used to describe these unique expressions of love, and agape is one of them. Agape love is distinct because it is not based on feelings or circumstances which may change. It is a deeper commitment made by one person to selflessly love and sacrifice for the well being of another person, unconditionally. A beautiful description of Agape love can be found in 1 Corinthians 13.
A great example of agape love is given in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The passage begins with Jesus confirming that we should love God with all of our heart, soul, strength and mind, and that we should also love our neighbors as ourselves. When asked “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus shares the story of a badly wounded man and the unlikely stranger, who, despite cultural tensions and no personal connection, had compassion and provided all that was necessary for his recovery. So what is the answer to the original question? Everyone we encounter is a neighbor; we should love and care about the well-being of all people.
After Jesus shares the parable, he tells his audience to “Go and do likewise.” This is where Building Families for Children can step in! If you aspire to live out the lifelong challenge of “loving your neighbor as yourself”, we urge you to consider one of the many ways you can get involved in our transformational services!
