Building Families was formed in 1920 by a group of concerned Baptist laypersons from Baltimore, including Willoughby McCormick, founder of McCormick Spice Company. Click here to learn more about our history!
What is the Mission of Building Families?

If I were to donate funds, how would my money be used?
We have a responsibility to our community and our donors and work hard to ensure long-term sustainability of the organization’s programs. We make our IRS Form 990 available for review, as required by law. The organization’s total annual administrative percentage is 11.4%. This figure is calculated by referring to our IRS form 990, adding our fundraising expenses and management/general expenses and dividing the result by our total expenses. Besides donations, how is Building Families funded?
Building Families is funded by private giving and a contract with Maryland’s Department of Human Resources (to provide Treatment Foster Care services). This contract provides 80-90% of the agency’s annual revenue. Our current strategic plan includes an initiative to balance our funding sources and sustain and build our family stability services to meet the many needs therein.
