With his mother just released from incarceration for distribution of drugs, and 8-year-old boy (we’ll call him “Joey”)– with a history of abandonment, neglect, abuse and multiple unsuccessful treatment foster care placements elsewhere– was referred to our CHOSEN TFC program early in 2010. Having been exposed to illicit drugs in utero and severe sexual abuse by an older male cousin, his problem behaviors included: fire setting, property destruction, stealing, acting out sexually, self-mutilation, compulsive lying, and attempted suicide. Joey’s psychiatric diagnosis included the disorders: ADHD, Reactive Attachment, Disruptive Behavior, Bipolar, Mood, Anxiety, and PTSD. Under very difficult circumstances, the skilled and timely intervention of our staff, coupled with the stable support of Joey’s therapist, psychiatrist and caring Building Families trained treatment foster parents, have made a significant difference in Joey’s life. Through weekly home visits by his Building Families Treatment Manager (FTM), Joey’s issues, services needed, strengths, struggles, progress, and personal growth were discussed in detail. He was also provided with weekly therapy and routine medical, dental, mental health and medication care, as well as an education and much-needed IEP services. The result is that, after two years in treatment, Joey’s unsafe behaviors have ended, he has excelled academically, he is now ready to deal with his past sexual abuse, his treatment foster parents have legally adopted him and his biological mother has expressed interest in developing a healthy relationship with her son through participating in family therapy.
