As a recent immigrant from China (we’ll call her “Liu”) and mother of three young children, Liu struggled with English, was unable to work legally, and felt hopeless about her situation. Abandoned by her unfaithful husband who refused to support the family financially, she was referred to Building Families by a Reisterstown pastor. A Building Families case manager met regularly with Liu for more than a year, during which time we paid for her Chinese degree to be officially translated; sent her to the Red Cross for job training; donated a laptop; provided her with gift cards, books, Christmas gifts and holiday meals; helped her navigate the court system; and provided emotional support for her loss. The result? Liu successfully met her goals of becoming financially, socially, emotionally, legally, and culturally stable and independent. In addition to securing a full-time job, Liu has become a naturalized US citizen and has secured child support through the courts.
